ABOUT US

Generation Citizen offers tools for the rising generation to build civic skills and make America the inclusive, multi-racial democracy that we need. We are transforming how civics is taught by providing equity-rooted, real-world civic education, which helps students understand how governments function and how they can make a difference in the system. Through hands-on civic education, legislative advocacy, coalition building, and youth leadership development, we teach young people how to have a voice and become active citizens in their communities.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Generation Citizen is looking for an experienced, strategic communications leader to elevate our brand and amplify the importance of student voice and project-based, K-12 civic learning as a pathway towards a thriving, participatory democracy. This Director-level role is a hands-on, "player-coach" position designed for a builder who thrives at the intersection of high-level strategy and tactical execution. You will be responsible for defining and implementing our national communications and marketing vision, for leveraging data to optimize our media reach and digital presence, and for further positioning GC as a thought leader at the intersection of democracy and education. In this role, you will oversee, develop, and mentor a small but dynamic team, including a part-time Social Media Manager and a seasonal intern, while also managing external PR firms. You will lead with both vision and precision, balancing the development of scalable infrastructure with direct involvement in drafting, designing, and executing high-impact content that advances our student-centered mission.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

External Communications & Marketing Strategy (25%)

  • Architect and oversee a comprehensive, multi-channel marketing and communications strategy that elevates GC’s brand and drives engagement, aligning with our student-centered, pro-democracy mission.
  • Define the strategic vision for national content; empower and supervise the team, at national and regional levels,  to execute high-impact newsletters, impact reports, and campaigns.
  • Manage and refine GC’s national brand strategy, ensuring consistency while allowing for regional nuance.
  • Leverage data and analytics to drive digital marketing growth, moving from basic reporting to audience-focused optimization.
  • Set the roadmap for our digital presence, overseeing website architecture and managing partnerships with external agencies and vendors.

Civic Voice & Public Affairs (25%)

  • Define the strategic PR roadmap; proactively position GC leaders as thought authorities through op-eds, media placements, and high-impact speaking engagements.
  • Direct the team and outside firms in building and maintaining relationships with key media outlets, journalists, and influencers.
  • Ensure our visual and written narrative is cohesive, impactful, and authentic to the diverse communities we serve.
  • Leverage GC’s communication channels to influence district leaders, policymakers, and fundraisers to prioritize student-led, project-based civics.
  • Develop and deploy digital assets (preformatted templates, graphics, newsletters) to amplify GC’s impact during signature events, impact webinars, legislative sessions, and Civics Day experiences.

Content Creation & Project Management (30%)

  • Lead daily content creation, including writing copy for newsletters, reports, and digital campaigns, and producing visual assets.
  • Establish directional priorities for, and supervise the social media manager’s creation of the content calendar and digital community engagement.
  • Manage GC’s day-to-day editorial calendar, ensuring all content is produced, scheduled, and published on time.
  • Drive end-to-end project management, tracking all key deliverables, coordinating cross-functional inputs, and ensuring deadlines are met for all communication workstreams.
  • Manage the creation of marketing materials for fundraising and school partnership recruitment, collaborating across GC’s national and regional teams, and overseeing internal staff or outside consultants as needed.

Systems, Infrastructure & Organizational Learning (10%)

  • Engineer the systems, communication workflows, and infrastructure that allow a distributed team to operate with speed and clarity.
  • Drive organizational alignment on GC’s brand strategy and ensure its effective implementation across all regional sites.
  • Foster an internal culture of storytelling; build and manage equity-centered training resources that elevate staff expertise across the organization.
  • Establish and enforce internal policies for social media, brand usage, and external affairs to maintain organizational integrity and agility.

Leadership & Team Management (10%)

  • Lead, mentor, and coach the communications team, specifically supervising a Social Media Manager and a seasonal communications intern.
  • Provide clear guidance and delegate tactical components of social media to direct reports, while remaining personally involved in high-impact content creation and narrative development.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that balances high-level strategy with tactical excellence, setting clear performance goals, providing regular feedback, and actively managing professional development.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
